An essential element to researching universities is the college tour. However, you may be limited by how far away a college is and how many trips you can take to visit schools. Fortunately, many virtual tours were vastly improved during the pandemic, so you can make this a part of your online research.

Here are a few tips for getting the most from the tours that you have to do virtually due to time, distance, or finances.

  • Leave time to do the tours right rather than trying to cram in a tour to every school – It’s simply not reasonable to try and visit every school you plan to apply to, and that includes both in-person and virtual visits. Prioritize the schools that you are most interested in and the ones where acceptance seems the most likely.
  • Learn about the school’s virtual tour – If the “tour” is just a pre-recorded video, that’s probably not the best school to tour virtually. Look for ones that are either fully interactive or at least offer a hybrid format.
  • Have your screen recorder ready – The tour may pass by quickly, and you don’t want to miss the parts that are the most relevant to you, so be sure to record the tour to watch back the most important segments.
  • Create a learning environment – Take precautions to ensure you won’t be interrupted or distracted during the tour.
