When writing a “why us” college essay, you need to explain your reasons behind choosing a university. Of course, there are many reasons a college may have made your list, and not all of those reasons are going to be a good essay topic. Let’s consider a few “don’ts” so that you avoid some of the most commonly made mistakes regarding this college application essay type.

  • Mistake 1: The generic “praise” essay – Universities have a pretty healthy ego. They don’t need students who aren’t even accepted to their school yet to explain what makes their university so great. So be sure to stick to explaining why you are the right student to fit into their academic program and school culture.
  • Mistake 2: Simple mistakes regarding the school – This one is a huge “don’t.” If you make simple mistakes like getting the school name wrong in your essay or spelling a staff member’s name wrong, or mistaking the university’s mascot, there are a few thoughts that will instantly come to the admission officer’s mind. Either you don’t care, you were rushing, or you didn’t do enough research (and you won’t be there to defend yourself, even if none of those things are true).
  • Mistake 3: Making it too simple – Maybe you love how close (or far) the school is from home or the weather or the surrounding city. That’s great – but it’s not what the school is looking for in a “why us” essay. Stick to what makes the school’s program a good fit for your education and career goals.
