Taking college tours in person is a great way to see if that school really offers the education experience you are looking for, but in order to learn what you need to during these visits, you will want to follow these guidelines:

  1. Plan ahead – The sooner you start thinking about college tours, the better. You need to pick the schools, schedule the visits, and maybe even save up to ensure the experience won’t set you back financially.
  2. Set a spending limit – Decide what you can afford to spend and then visit the best schools you can within that price range. You may be able to tour some other schools virtually.
  3. Choose the schools – Once you have your budget set, it’s time to decide which schools you will visit. The choice will depend on what universities you are interested in, the travel costs, and whether or not an in-person tour is available.
  4. Don’t expect perfection – A tour can’t give you the whole experience. You need to be prepared to see limited facilities and only get a few questions answered.
  5. Schedule a few visits close to home – Even if all the schools on your list are far away, visiting some nearby schools can help you get more of a grasp on the college experience without breaking the bank. Plus, one of them may surprise you and get added to your applications list.
