Where they feel their industries are going in the future

High school students will get an opportunity to hear short presentations by these professionals to help them learn for themselves about these career opportunities. This is an great opportunity for students to determine if these are majors they would like to pursue in college and careers they feel would be a great fit for them!

This event will be FREE and open to ANY high school students and held at Rancho Bernardo High School on Thursday, May. 19, 2016 from 6pm-8pm. Rooms 201 & 202

I was born in Guatemala City, Guatemala and grew up in Concord, CA (East Bay Area) from grade school to high school. I moved to San Diego to attend UCSD for Bio-engineering. In my junior year I started an internship at an Instrumentation company called Aurora Biosciences. In my final year at UCSD that company was acquired by Vertex Pharmaceuticals. A few months after my graduation I was hired on as a full time employee by Vertex Pharmaceuticals and have made my career there as a Software/Applications/Bio-engineer.


Vineet Bafna

Vineet Bafna joined the UCSD faculty on July 1, 2003, after seven years in the biosciences industry. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Pennsylvania State University in 1994, and was a post-doctoral researcher at its Center for Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science for two years. From 1996-99, Bafna was a senior investigator at SmithKline Beecham, conducting research on DNA signaling, target discovery and EST assembly. From 1999 to 2002, he worked at Celera Genomics, ultimately as Director of Informatics Research, at a time when Celera was decoding the human genome. He arrived at the Jacobs School from the Center for Advancement in Genomics, recently set up by Celera founder Craig Venter. Bafna has been on the Program Committees of the past two annual International Conferences on Research in Computational Biology (RECOMB), and is on the editorial board of the Journal of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology (JBCB). He received his B.Tech from the Indian Institute of Technology in 1989, and has published two dozen articles in major journals and conference proceedings. Read More...

Dr. John Beccari has lived and practiced in North County San Diego since 1995 with his wife and veterinary partner, Dr. Justie Reimann. He met her in his home state of New York at the College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University, where he graduated in 1995. Together they have owned Academy Animal Hospital since 1999 and have enjoyed the camaraderie and success of their new partnership, started in 2007, with Drs. Serrano and Zanders. Dr. Beccari can be frequently found spending time outdoors either going to the beach, camping, hiking, or geocaching with his two young daughters, and has recently taken up Tae Kwon Do instruction with them. He enjoys traveling to visit family or just exploring the country, but he also looks forward to relaxed time spent at home in Carlsbad with his many pets, including 4 cats, 3 dogs, and a pond full of koi and other fish.

Mr. Choisser received his degree in electrical engineering at the University of Arizona, and took graduate courses in mathematics at Syracuse University. He is an Air Force veteran, having been an officer in the Data Processing Branch of the Intelligence and Electronic Warfare Directorate of Rome Air Development Center, Griffiss AFB, New York. Upon leaving the service, he was awarded the Air Force Systems Command Award for Scientific Achievement. In his business career, his work involved the development of low-light-level sensors for military and scientific uses. He is one of the co-inventors and developer of the Digicon, the multi-channel photon counting image tubes used in both of the original Hubble Space Telescope spectrographs. He was awarded special recognition for this work by the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. His longest career was designing and building industrial versions of the IBM PC. An early project was with Teledyne Ryan, helping with the design of the cockpit data recorder for the Boeing 747. His subsequent work with industry and the military resulted in the use of Microsoft DOS and Windows in a wide variety of non-desktop applications. He was editor-in-chief of the Windows CE Tech Journal, a Miller-Freeman publication. His hobbies have always been airplanes, gardening, cooking, and golf. Writing has been a life-long pursuit, now more for pleasure than for business. Today his books involve cooking, aquaponics, and books intended to induce curiosity and wonder in young people about math, science, and engineering.

Cheif Electrical Engineer - Spreadtum, Inc.

David Haub is one of four Chief Engineers at Spreadtum, Inc.  Spreadtrum is a company based in Shanghai, China that makes wireless chipsets for cellular phones. David received a BSEE from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in 1990 where he graduated Summa Cum Laude.  He was named the most outstanding Electrical Engineering student his senior year at Rose-Hulman by the EE faculty.  He was then awarded a Research Fellowship and went on to receive an MSEE from the California Institute of Technology in 1991 studying microwave, radio frequency, and antenna design.    David began working as an engineer in 1991 at JPL/NASA where he designed radio frequency circuits and antennas for radar systems and equipment used in earth remote sensing.  In 1995 he spent 6 months working at a startup company called Amerigon on radar systems for cars.  At the end of 1995 he began a career in cellular phones by joining Motorola where he worked on antenna design, cellular handset design and RF chipset design.  In 2003, he took a job at Texas Instruments where he continued his work on RF chipset design.  In 2005, he decided to join a startup company called Quorum Systems that was developing RF chips for cellular phones using a novel integrated circuit process called CMOS.  As principal radio architect, he became the overall lead for system specification, simulation, and verification of Quorum’s RF integrated circuits.  Quorum Systems was acquired by Chinese based cellular chipset company Spreadtrum at the end of 2008.  David continues his work in designing and developing RF integrated circuits for Spreadtrum to support the latest cellular standards.  The efforts of David and the San Diego based Spreadtrum team have resulted in shipments of more than 1 billion integrated circuits into cellular handsets all over the world.  He has received 23 patents over his career focused on the RF and/or antenna area of cellular design.  David is happily married to Karen Haub an Artist and is the proud father of two soon to be college bound daughters.  He loves staying active by running races and swimming.

Karen Haub is an artist, designer, and teacher with over 20 years of professional and freelance
experience in the field of graphic design, photography, and illustration. She worked as a mural
painter and completed work for the Doubletree Hotel in Mission Valley as well as several
schools and luxury homes in 2004. Before opening up her own studio and gallery in Carmel
Mtn Business Park in October 2014, Karen worked as an adjunct professor in the Graphic Communications Dept. of Palomar college teaching both Intermediate Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. Her students have won Best in Show Awards at the Graphic Communications Expos and Del Mar Fair. In the last few years she has designed and illustrated book covers, done head shots, and completed a body of Fine Art paintings which she sold over half of on the opening night of her reception at Koi Zen Cellars in March.

Most recently Karen has been teaching painting workshops at her studio as well as at Koi Zen Cellars Urban Winery. Karen graduated from Art Center College of Design in 1992 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Illustration. Karen enjoys running, yoga, and a vegan lifestyle. She has been married for 21 years to an Engineer, David, and they have 2
beautiful daughters who are college bound in the next 2 years!

Jeffrey Rosenburg, MD, FACS is a board certified physician specializing in Cardiothoracic Surgery. He received his medical degree from the University of Southern California in 1983. He served his General Surgery residency at Harbor/UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles (1983-1985) and Kaiser Foundation Hospital in Oakland, CA (1983-1989). Derek Sage is the current founder and president of several businesses including SOS Entertainment, Fundamentals Event Academy and Global Impact Youth Leadership Initiatives.   His businesses have locations in San Diego, Los Angeles and San Jose.   Acting in various leadership positions in these companies, Derek oversees 20+ full-time employees and over 50+ part time team members.   SOS Entertainment has won various awards such as “Business of the Year” and “Entrepreneurial Business of the Year”.   Derek has donated over $1,000,000 in cash or event services to non-profit and charity initiatives.

Derek speaks fluent Mandarin Chinese and is a frequent visitor to China and Taiwan for business endeavors and travel.  Derek has also been speaking and training groups professionally since 2003 and has presented to over 200,00 people in several states and countries.

Derek is married with two children loves his time with his family.  He lives by the personal mantra of “discover, progress, contribute” and believes joy in life comes from either sharing or teaching what you possess with others.

Scott F. Templeton is a member of the new matters practice group and focuses his practice on evaluating and initiating shareholder rights actions on behalf of investor clients. Mr. Templeton has extensive experience in drafting complaints, motions, settlement documents, and other pleadings in the prosecution of complex civil litigation, including shareholder derivative actions addressing fiduciary misconduct, stock option backdating, insider trading, and other unlawful activities impacting investors. Drawing on his engineering background, Mr. Templeton has been instrumental in assisting shareholders pursue technology-related claims against wrongdoers.

Mr. Templeton earned his Juris Doctor degree from the University of San Diego School of Law. Biotech - Cytogenetic Technologist

Becky Thai was born in a small town in South Vietnam called Cam Ranh. Her family moved to San Diego when she was six and has lived in North County ever since. She attended the University of California San Diego and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and Cellular Biology and a minor in Visual Arts. She currently holds a Clinical Lab Scientist license in Cytogenetics and have been a cytogenetic technologist for the last 5 years.

Some fun facts about her: She attended five different elementary schools. She can comfortably read, write, and converse in Vietnamese but English has become my primary language. Her education is in the sciences but she has a passion for the creative arts and enjoys painting when she can find some time. Her ultimate favorite pastime is eating my way around the rest of the world.

A seasoned industry veteran with more than 30 years of experience, Gary Whitfield joined ICW Group in 2008 as Director of Enterprise Marketing.  He currently heads the Enterprise Marketing Department and oversees all aspects of the company’s marketing programs.  These include customer communications, public relations, market research, event marketing, website development and corporate communications.  Over the past 8 years, ICW Group has become a nationally ranked property & casualty insurer with nearly $1 billion in annual revenue.

Prior to joining ICW Group, Gary held a variety of marketing related positions for Advertising Agencies and Corporate Trademark Licensing firms in Los Angeles and San Diego.   He helped develop successful advertising and promotional programs for such companies as American Express, Baskin-Robbins, General Motors, Korean Airlines, Nissan Motor Corp. and the San Diego Zoo.

Gary earned his bachelor’s degree from the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University.  He lives in Carmel Valley; a suburb of San Diego and in his spare time enjoys surfing, yoga, and hanging out with his family.

Half man, half awesome.  Shaun has been involved with marketing efforts for nearly 20 years.  His current role as an executive marketing consultant at ZUZA Marketing Asset Management allows him to work closely and guide business leadership from various industries across the globe.   Before moving to California in 2014, he served as Director of Admissions with the Art Institutes in Georgia and Florida.  As an alumni of Georgia State University, he holds a dual-Bachelors in Journalism and Sociology.  His secret to success:  Treat others like they want to be treated.

Glenette Winter is a native Texan.  She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in nursing in 1988 from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston and is board certified by the state of California as a Registered Nurse.  Glenette relocated to California from Texas in 1991 and currently resides in Poway with her husband and two children.

Early in her career, Glenette worked on a Surgical Oncology unit and in a large Recovery Room at St. Joseph Hospital in Houston, Texas.  After marrying, and moving to the San Diego area, she transitioned to the outpatient setting, where she worked in the Recovery Room and later in a marketing capacity for the Frost Street Outpatient Surgical Center.

Since 2004, Glenette has treated patients at multiple medical laser and skincare centers in the San Diego area.  She holds certifications from Laserscope, Allergan, maker of medical aesthetics including Botox, Juvederm, Voluma and Latisse, has been trained in Merz Aesthetics products which include Radiesse, Xeomin, Belotero Balance and Asclera as well as Galderma’s products, Sculptra and Dysport. Additionally, Glenette is certified in Aesthetic Laser Procedures through the Laser Training Institute and is versed in the use of Cynosure’s SculpSure body contouring laser.

As a practicing Aesthetic RN at Dermacare, Glenette’s goal is to not see her clients only once but to have them as a friend and client for life.  It is so very important to her to make sure her clients are pleased with every aspect of their care.  She enjoys listening to their desires and aesthetic goals and personally follows up with each of her clients and encourages them to let her know if there are any questions or concerns with their treatments.  Education is one of Glenette’s passions and she enjoys talking with each of her clients, letting them know not only how everything works and what to expect, but what the best course of treatment would be.  She is especially sensitive to finances and wants her clients to get the most for their hard-earned dollar.  Her positive energy and Southern Hospitality will put you at ease at the most opportune time.
