College Planning Source – Workshop Descriptions

Resume Workshop

Attendees: For all students looking to create a professional resume for job, summer program, internship, and college applications.

Students will be walked through resume basics like formatting and creating effective descriptions for each activity/experience on their resume. We will focus on highlighting transferable skills, notable achievements, and relevant interests.

Application Season Kickoff Workshop

Attendees: For students any student applying to college

This workshop will take place at the Scripps Ranch Library. We will provide an overview of the application process including application types (UC, Common App, CSU, Coalition App, and Institutional), important deadlines, and required supplemental materials (letters of recommendation, sending official test scores, sending transcripts, etc).

Application Orientation Workshop

Attendees: For students who have not had the opportunity to attend the Application Season Kickoff Workshop at the Scripps Ranch Library.

We will provide an overview of the application process including application types (UC, Common App, CSU, Coalition App, and Institutional), important deadlines, and required supplemental materials (letters of recommendation, sending official test scores, sending transcripts, etc).

Common Application Workshop

Attendees: For students who are applying to private and out-of-state universities.

During this workshop students will begin and complete the main Common Application (the “main Common App” is the portion of the application that is submitted to all schools, there will be supplemental applications for each individual university students apply to using the Common Application). Counselors will guide students through the application while offering tips and strategies and answer any questions related to the Common Application.

UC Application Workshop

Attendees: For students applying to any of the nine (9) University of California campuses.

During this workshop students will begin and complete the University of California Application. Counselors will guide students through the application while offering tips and strategies and answer any student questions related to the UC Application.

CSU Application Workshop

Attendees: For students: applying to any of the 23 California State Universities (including Cal Poly – SLO, SDSU, SFSU, SJSU, and Cal Poly – Pomona).

During this workshop students will begin and complete the California State University Application. Counselors will guide students on how to appropriately and effectively report A-G coursework, community college coursework, and assist with filling out the supplementary application questions required by SOME CSUs.

Essay Development Workshop

Attendees: For students who will be writing college application essays (UC application, Common Application, Coalition Application, and SOME Institutional Application).

An in-depth overview of common college application essay types. Students will work in small groups to brainstorm potential essay topics for each of the essay types. Students will then work individually to develop personalized essay topics for each essay type and will be advised to bring these ideas with them to their next college counseling appointment.

Application Profile Workshop

Attendees: For students who need to incorporate a succinct list of activities into their college applications (the Common Application, UC Application, Coalition Application, and SOME Institutional Applications require activities lists).

Counselors will help students select the most recent, relevant, and impressive activities to highlight and help develop effective descriptions for each.

College Application Study Hall

Attendees: For all students who would like to work on their college applications.

During this specified time students can work on their applications (this includes working on activities lists, essays, and filling out applications). During this time a CPSI staff member will be around to answer questions and provide support if needed.

Parent Workshop

Attendees: For parents of Class of 2020 students.

During this workshop we will provide an overview of what is to come in the college application process, as well as detail important dates and deadlines, essay editing protocol, and outline the roles of everyone involved in this process – student, parent, CPSI counselor, and high school counselor.
